Routine Engine Maintenance Checklist

A simple under-hood inspection before your next trip is an inexpensive and simple way to prevent engine wear or damage. Below are some crucial items to check in order to keep your motor running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

1. Engine oil

One of the most important fluids to check is your engine oil. The engine oil lubricates the internal moving parts, keeping them from wearing too quickly. Checking the oil level on a regular basis is key to keeping your engine running well and getting the most miles out of your RV.

2. Coolant

The coolant, also known as anti-freeze is what keeps your engine cool when driving. Without the right amount of coolant, your engine can overheat, leaving you stranded by the side of the road. Be sure your engine has cooled down fully before attempting to check the levels. Do not remove the cap while the engine is hot, this can result in blast of hot steam or burns from splashing coolant.

3. Belts & Hoses

It is important to check all belts and hoses under the hood, especially if your RV is a few years old. The serpentine belt is what drives components such as the power steering pump, alternator and water pump. Check the belt for any cracks or fraying. This can save you from having the belt break, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. It is also important to check all the hoses for any cracks, nicks, or loose clamps.

4. Brake Fluid

Checking the brake fluid is easier than you think and far more important than you could imagine. Maintaining optimal brake fluid levels is important to your safety, your RV’s responsiveness, and the overall lifespan of the brakes. When adding brake fluid be careful as brake fluid is corrosive and can damage your RV’s paint.

5. DEF Fluid

If you have a diesel RV, you’ve likely heard of Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF. The fluid is a solution of urea in de-ionized water that is sprayed into the exhaust stream to help break down toxic emissions. Since this fluid is an integral part of your RV’s fuel system, it’s important to never let your vehicle run out of DEF. When your tank starts to get low, you’ll see a warning on your dashboard. DEF can be purchased at most gas stations, auto stores, and major retail stores like Walmart.
